I have been experimenting with new salsa flavors with my one of my favorite ingredients, avocados! And this easy avocado and tomatillo salsa recipe just hits the spot! This is the perfect combination of a fresh salsa verde, mixed with creamy avocado for a smooth and spicy salsa!

Avocado salsa (sometimes called guacamole salsa or salsa de aguacate in Spanish) is a perfect blend of avocados, tomatillos, peppers, and other fresh ingredients. There are many variations of avocado salsa, like my creamy avocado salsa recipe without tomatillos, salsa verde with avocado chunks, or even a chunky salsa more like an avocado-based pico de gallo.
This recipe that I am sharing is a bit of a mix using the base of a traditional fresh salsa verde, but adding in the creaminess of avocados for the perfect blend of flavors and textures. This homemade salsa recipe will have you skipping the bottled variety at your local grocery store to make fresh, delicious salsas at home! With only a few fresh ingredients and about 5 minutes, this salsa is ready to accompany your next Mexican meal!

What’s in tomatillo avocado salsa?
- Fresh tomatillos: Also known as green husk tomatoes
- Serrano peppers: I use just one, but add more to increase the heat if desired!
- Garlic clove
- Avocados: I use a Hass variety
- White onion
- Fresh cilantro
- Salt
- Lime juice
Substitutions and variations
Easy customizations
Like most salsas, ingredients can be substituted according to your own particular tastes! Don’t like cilantro? No need to add it. Prefer a milder salsa? Substitute the serrano peppers for jalapeño peppers or don’t add any chile pepper at all for a completely mild version. If you don’t have white onion on hand, you could substitute for yellow. Really, this avocado and tomatillo salsa invites customization.
What not to substitute
There are a couple of things that I wouldn’t use in this dish though. I like the bright green color of this salsa. It basically screams freshness! Using tomatoes in this dish or red onion will turn this salsa a darker brown color. And while it might still be delicious, it won’t be as visually appealing.
Texture variation
One of my favorite things about this salsa is the texture. This salsa starts with a smooth base, but the chopped onions and cilantro give it just the right consistency. This salsa is smoother than guacamole, but a bit chunkier than my creamy avocado salsa. Of course, the texture is a matter of preference. If you want smoother salsa, ensure that all ingredients are added to the blender and then blended completely smooth. If you want your salsa with a bit more texture, try pulsing the ingredients in the blender for your desired consistency.

Equipment
I use my blender to whip up this salsa, but if you prefer, you could use a food processor!
How to make avocado and tomatillo salsa step-by-step
This salsa is super easy to whip up. Basically, all you have to do is let your blender do the work! Be sure to check the recipe card for the quantities and full instructions.
Blend the tomatillos, chile pepper, and garlic smooth
I like to start this salsa by making a base of a typical salsa verde. Add your tomatillos, serrano pepper, and garlic clove to the blender and blend on high speed until smooth. Once you have a liquid base, you are ready to add the avocados.
Add the avocados
Start with chopped avocados. Add one avocado to the blender at a time, pulsing a bit after each addition to create a bit of texture to the salsa.

Stir in the remaining ingredients
Lastly, stir in the chopped onions, cilantro, and salt until evenly incorporated. I like to top my salsa with a few drops of lime juice for extra flavor and to help slow the oxidation process (what turns avocados brown once they are exposed to air).

That’s it! Now, you have a delicious variation of salsa verde, perfect for your next taco night or backyard carne asada.
Tips for making the best avocado and tomatillo salsa
Start with cut-up ingredients
I don’t have the world’s most powerful blender, so I like to help things along by cutting up my salsa ingredients before adding them to the blender. Taking this extra step helps my salsa ingredients blend to a more even consistency.
Add avocado slowly
In my experience, adding all of the avocados at one time tends to freeze up my blender. Adding the avocados one at a time ensures that my blender can do the work to give the salsa its texture. I have also found it easier to have my avocados cut up into chunks before adding them to the blender.

FAQs
Is avocado salsa the same as guacamole?
No. Guacamole is a thicker avocado-based dip made with mashed avocados and other ingredients. Avocado salsa is generally smoother with a more liquid consistency. I wrote a whole article on the difference that you can find here!
Is avocado salsa good for you?
Yes! Avocados are considered healthy foods and for good reason! They contain healthy fats, fiber, and nearly 20 vitamins and minerals are bodies need to perform at their best! Plus, this salsa is made with completely fresh ingredients and is suited for a gluten-free and vegan diet!
How do you store avocado and tomatillo salsa?
For the freshest and best flavor, I recommend eating this salsa within just a few hours of making it. If you have any leftovers or need to make this salsa a bit in advance, it will keep in the fridge in an airtight container.
How long is avocado salsa good for?
I have been able to store leftover avocado and tomatillo salsa in the fridge for up to 3 days without it turning an unappetizing brown color. It doesn’t last longer than that in our house, because we eat it too fast!
What can I serve with avocado and tomatillo salsa?
This salsa will work well on just about any type of Mexican food like tacos, quesadillas, or tostadas. You could use it as a salad dressing for taco salad or in burrito bowls! It makes a perfect dip for fresh veggies or corn tortilla chips. I love to use this salsa on our grilled steak or chicken tacos!
